WHAT'S THE PROBLEM? lack of appropriate housing for GEN Y
http://www.theguardian.com/housing-network/2014/may/12/why-house-prices-so-expensive-uk
"We all know there is a housing crisis, a typical house is half as affordable as it was in 1997."
What's causing the problem?
Market Failure
Demand>Supply
DEMAND is inflexible (localized - primarily to where there are decent jobs)
SUPPLY is limited by btl landlords, investment from overseas and second home owners.
Private Housing provision>Social Housing provision
Market failure is perpetual because:
Unregulated markets will always limit supply to maximize profit for the producer.
The market is operating around economic assumptions where the only thing that matters about a house is it's VALUE.
...not its LOCATION, AMENITIES, CULTURAL HISTORY, SOCIAL JUSTICE, COMMUNITY, ENVIRONMENT etc.
Result
Houses are expensive, they're in the wrong location, they have poor facilities and amenities and are built without adequate environmental agendas.
WHERE COULD THE SOLUTION LYE? by Looking further than the HOUSE itself.
