CONSCIOUS CITY

I am interested in the use and development of a real time responsive environment.

This is essential to adopt a shared economy on a citywide scale.

Real time responsive environments are already working with services such as car and bike sharing schemes, where complex algorithms configure data to provide real time signals, based on a platform of online mesh data networks monitoring human activity. However, a lot more data will need to be collated and processed to allow collaborative consumption between everything we use on a city wide scale.

Our bodies are an example of a shared economy, where energy is distributed logically on a collaborative basis and our bodies react in real time to outside stimuli, so perhaps it is possible to draw an analogy between the human body and a collaboratively consuming economy.

For example, when we touch something the action is detected by specialized nerves found in the skin, muscle and viscera and this is then transduced into electrical energy, when this electrical energy reaches a pre-programmed threshold value, an action potential is induced and driven towards the central nervous system along the peripheral nerve. This leads to the train of events that allows the conscious awareness of a sensation to be processed and for a message to be sent back to provide information on the action required.

Analogy - A conscious city

The city is a conscious. People are detected by the city and they provide data. When this data reaches pre-programmed threshold values, messages are induced and driven towards the data processing centre via wifi. This leads to the logical processing of information and conscious awareness of current activity. A message can then be sent back to a person, providing information on the action required.

This has led me to look at the sensory and motor neurons in our body and how they could play a role in our city.

I have looked at Urbed's Garden City which looks at 'Uxbridge' an imaginary city and how it could expand in the future. Visually I have adapted Urbed's masterplan and collided it with images, predominately of dendrites of cells involved in the reception of stimuli in the human body to graphically suggest how a Conscious City (which has the capacity to allow collaborative consumption) could look.
